There is a need for a broad understanding within the industry about best practice to reduce carbon. With a whole life carbon perspective, sub-optimization can be avoided. Carbon emissions are released not only during operational life but also during the manufacturing, transportation, construction and end of life phases of all built assets – buildings and infrastructure. Embodied carbon refers to carbon emissions associated with materials and construction processes throughout the whole lifecycle.

To be able to reach high CO2 reductions, important initiatives have to be initiated early in the planning phase. Necessary actions have to be taken already in the building process to tackle carbon upfront.
